    Ober Gatlinburg

    Tennessee's only ski area, reached by aerial tram from downtown Gatlinburg, with skiing and skating in winter and an alpine coaster, zip line and wildlife habitat the rest of the year.

    Tip: The official site lists a parking lot near the aerial tram at 314 Cottage Drive, Gatlinburg.

    Ski and snow activities run in the colder months (roughly November to March). Oktoberfest at Ober runs Sept. 25 to Nov. 1, 2026. Went by Ober Mountain from 2022 until a 2026 return to the Ober Gatlinburg name.

    Grotto Falls via Trillium Gap Trail

    A moderate forest hike of about 2.6 miles round trip to a 25-foot waterfall that the trail passes behind.

    Tip: Parking at the Trillium Gap trailhead is very limited, and you cannot buy a parking tag on Roaring Fork, so buy one before you go.

    Trailhead is on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, which is open April 17 to Nov. 29, 2026. As of Oct. 9, 2026 the park lists an active-bear caution on Trillium Gap Trail. Parking tag required to park more than 15 minutes anywhere in the park ($5 daily, $15 weekly, $40 annual).

    Laurel Falls Trail

    Closed until 2027

    A popular 2.6-mile round-trip waterfall hike near Sugarlands that is currently closed for a major rehabilitation project.

    CLOSED since Jan. 6, 2025 for rehabilitation. The original 18-month estimate slipped; the park now expects to reopen it in 2027. Sugarlands Mountain Trail is also closed from the same trailhead.

    Alum Cave Trail to Alum Cave Bluffs

    A 4.6-mile round-trip climb off Newfound Gap Road past Arch Rock to a large overhanging bluff, with stairs, roots and steep sections.

    Tip: The park warns of extreme crowding and limited parking at the trailhead and recommends using a shuttle; turning around at Arch Rock makes a 2.8-mile round trip.

    Expect ice and falling icicles in winter; the park suggests microspikes. Parking tag required to park more than 15 minutes anywhere in the park ($5 daily, $15 weekly, $40 annual).

    Chimney Tops Trail

    A steep 3.5-mile round-trip hike with about 1,400 feet of climbing to an observation point looking at the Chimney Tops and Mount Le Conte.

    Tip: The last quarter mile to the rocky summit is closed to all use, so plan to turn around at the observation point.

    The summit has been closed since fire damage; the trail itself is open. Trailhead is on Newfound Gap Road, 6.7 miles south of Sugarlands Visitor Center. Parking tag required to park more than 15 minutes anywhere in the park ($5 daily, $15 weekly, $40 annual).

    Abrams Falls Trail

    A 5-mile round-trip hike from the far end of the Cades Cove Loop to a wide 20-foot waterfall, crossing three narrow log bridges.

    Tip: Allow 3 to 4 hours; the park notes that a late-afternoon start can mean hiking back in the dark.

    Do not climb on the rocks around the falls; the park reports deaths and serious injuries there. Pets and bikes are not allowed. Parking tag required to park more than 15 minutes anywhere in the park ($5 daily, $15 weekly, $40 annual).

    Cades Cove Loop Road

    An 11-mile one-way loop through an open mountain valley with historic churches, cabins and a working mill, and frequent deer sightings.

    Tip: Plan at least two to four hours for the drive, more if you hike, and use the paved pullouts when you stop.

    Open sunrise to sunset. Closed to vehicles on Wednesdays from May through September (May 6 to Sept. 30 in 2026) for walkers and cyclists. Heavy traffic in summer, fall and weekends.     Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail

    A narrow 5.5-mile one-way drive just outside Gatlinburg past old-growth forest, mountain streams, historic cabins and a roadside waterfall.

    Tip: Parking tags are not sold in the Roaring Fork area, so buy one before you drive in; buses, trailers and motor homes are not allowed.

    Seasonal road: open April 17 to Nov. 29, 2026. Reach it from Gatlinburg traffic light #8 via Historic Nature Trail Road and Cherokee Orchard Road.

    Newfound Gap

    The lowest drivable pass over the Smokies at 5,046 feet, on the Tennessee and North Carolina line, with a big overlook, the Rockefeller Memorial and an Appalachian Trail crossing.

    Tip: It is often 10 degrees or more cooler than Pigeon Forge, so bring a jacket.

    Newfound Gap Road can close for snow and ice. As of Oct. 9, 2026, Carlos Campbell Overlook on Newfound Gap Road is temporarily closed.

    Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome)

    The highest point in the Smokies and in Tennessee at 6,643 feet, reached by a short, steep paved path from the end of Kuwohi Road to an observation tower.

    Tip: The half-mile paved path to the tower is steep and not wheelchair accessible; parking fills on busy days.

    Fall color in the Smokies

    Leaf color moves down the mountains over several weeks, starting at the high peaks and reaching the valleys last.

    Tip: Go high first: elevations above 4,000 feet usually color in early to mid October, and lower elevations around mid October to early November.

    Timing shifts every year. Park-suggested color drives include the Foothills Parkway, Cades Cove and Roaring Fork, which get heavy traffic in October.

    Synchronous fireflies at Elkmont

    For a short window each late spring, fireflies at Elkmont flash in unison, and the park limits evening access to lottery winners.

    Tip: Enter the Recreation.gov lottery in late April ($1 application fee; winners pay $29 more for a vehicle reservation).

    2026 viewing ran May 20 to 27; the lottery opened April 24 and closed April 27, with results by May 6. Dates are set each year from soil temperatures, and peak has ranged from mid May to mid June.

Do you need a parking pass in the Smoky Mountains?
Yes. Any vehicle parked for more than 15 minutes anywhere inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park must display a parking tag. Tags cost $5 a day, $15 a week or $40 a year, must match your license plate, and can be bought online or at in-person locations. America the Beautiful passes are not accepted in place of a tag. When is the best time to see fall colors in the Smokies?
High elevations above 4,000 feet usually change first, with color building from early to mid October (sometimes starting mid September). Lower and middle elevations peak around mid October to early November. The exact timing varies from year to year. Source
Is Laurel Falls open?
No. Laurel Falls Trail has been closed since January 2025 for a major rehabilitation project. The park originally estimated 18 months, but unexpected site conditions pushed the reopening into 2027. Source
What happened to Clingmans Dome?
The peak was officially renamed Kuwohi, its Cherokee name, in September 2024, and the road to it is now Kuwohi Road. At 6,643 feet it is the highest point in the park and in Tennessee. In 2026 the road is open April 1 to Nov. 29 and closes to vehicles in winter. Source
When is Cades Cove closed to cars?
The 11-mile Cades Cove Loop Road is open to vehicles from sunrise to sunset. It is typically closed to cars every Wednesday from May through September so people can walk and bike it. Plan two to four hours for the drive on other days. Source
When is the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail open?
Roaring Fork is a seasonal road. In 2026 it is open April 17 through Nov. 29 and closed through the winter. Buses, trailers and motor homes are not allowed, and parking tags are not sold along the road. Source
How do you see the synchronous fireflies in the Smokies?
Evening access to Elkmont during the firefly window is by Recreation.gov lottery, which opens in late April. In 2026 the viewing window was May 20 to 27; entries cost $1 and winners paid an additional $29 for a vehicle reservation. Source
Can I bring my dog hiking in the Smokies?
Only on two trails: the Gatlinburg Trail and the Oconaluftee River Trail. The Gatlinburg Trail is about 4 miles round trip from Sugarlands Visitor Center to the edge of Gatlinburg and also allows bikes. Source
